Custom Drumheads

Custom Drumheads have been around for what seems like forever. Even before The Beatles first played Ed Sullivan - cementing the professionalism and iconic application of a Custom Drumhead - people were writing their band's name on the exterior of their resonant heads with markers, paints, and whatever else they could get their hands on.

So how do you take such a timeless, long running idea and make it as cutting edge and sonically proficient as the rest of our products? It was a challenge that both inspired and perplexed us. It's no secret that there are hordes of different places making Custom Drumheads; From drumhead manufacturers offering custom options, to third party suppliers altering retail heads, to local print shops screen printing your logo on a head.

So that's where we started. We bought every custom head that was available on the market. We screen printed heads. We put 22" stickers on heads. We sublimated heads. We stretched our Custom Grill Cloth substrate across circular brackets. From proprietary NoVOC digital coating to hand painted drumheads - we did it all.

After almost two years of never settling, constant research and development, and sending each of our prototypes out on the road with select artists, we finally came out with our own Custom Drumhead. A Custom Drumhead that offers the absolute best print quality. A Custom Drumhead that offers the greatest sonic integrity of any Custom Drumhead on the market. A Custom Drumhead worthy to bear the EC name. Read on the SPECS page to learn more.

After our years of extensive research, analyzing the feedback received from our clients on the road, and tapping every corner of technology on the market, we finally found a perfect solution: a proprietary substrate called FlexLock™. FlexLock™ is a minimal mil, double sided substrate. On one side you have a smooth white substrate, accepting our digital printing with the most visually crisp resolution available. This is the side that is printed on. The other side has a snakeskin-esque material, which expands under pressure (flex) and immediately contracts once pressure is removed (lock) without stretching or distortion. This is the side we adhere to the drumhead.

We adhere the printed FlexLock™ to a smooth white Remo Powerstroke 3 drumhead. The Remo Powerstroke 3 features a thin underlay at the outer edge of the head to subtly dampen unwanted overtones. This creates a perfect balance of mid range, response, and tone control that quickly made Powerstroke 3 one of Remo’s most preferred drumheads, and the perfect choice for EC's application. The FlexLock™ print is adhered to the Remo Powerstroke 3 through an evaporation-based adhesion process - so as the chemicals evaporate out, the FlexLock™ print is conformed perfectly to the contours and idiosyncrasies of the drumhead.

What that means is, when you kick the batter head and your resonant head responds, there is no excessive material 'on top' of your resonant head. The FlexLock™ has become one mil with the Remo PowerStroke 3, and because of the expansion and contraction properties of the FlexLock™, the head is allowed to resonante naturally - just like it would if there were no print on it at all. Another great feature of our Custom Drumhead is that the thin underlay at the outer edge of the Remo Powerstroke 3 head can be be cut away, allowing you a world of tonal options after you receive your Custom Drumhead. The more of the underlay you cut away, the more mid and high frequencies you can dial in.

To complete your drumhead with the finest components, we offer Bass Drum O's™ port hole reinforcement rings in a variety of sizes and colors, as well as KickPort™ Sonic Enhancement Ports. Both are fantastic products in their own right, and both complement our Custom Drumheads perfectly.

Why EC? The answer is pretty simple; this is all we do. Our passion, our pursuit, and our purpose is to design, invent, and fabricate the absolute best products for the creative and practical application of artwork on stage. We are a music industry exclusive company. Discerning professional musicians are our lifeblood, and our sole and only focus.

Your local print shop doesn't know what it's like to get to a venue and not have the proper Fire Cert to hang your backdrop: we do. Your sign shop doesn't understand the tone they're choking out of your drumhead with their screen printing: we do. Hardware stores don't know that the PVC pipe you're buying to build your own scrim stands will cost you $50-$150 to check it for a flight because it won't collapse small enough to be a carry-on: we do.

This is not a hobby, this is not a side project. This is an all-consuming passion that we want to share with every band and every artist making music today. We don't cut any corners, we don't make any excuses.

Top quality, no compromise; that's EC.
